Butterflies and Magic Bubbles

Light and shadow were part of our morning today, and the Catbirds come at this activity from a wide variety of places. Some of our friends are fascinated by the projector itself - the on/off switch, the fan, the focus. Others are intrigued by the light and the smooth surface, and other friends are making the link between what is on the light and the shadow it casts on the screen.

We also had our meeting with Marty. First, we gathered at the door and thought about the questions we had to ask. The following were our questions and Marty's answers:
Will it be a playhouse? (Answer: It could be.)
Will it be a monster house? (If you want, but we won't be putting any monsters in it.)
What is that purple thing? (A scaffold. We built it so that we could work up high, and we will take it down when we are done.)
What are those things he has on his knees? (Robot knees...just kidding. They are knee pads, so he can work on the floor without hurting his knees.)

Then, we got out Paige's book and went out into the Commons to do some yoga.

We tried the airplane...

...the Boat pose...

and the Bridge pose. Yoga is a great way to stretch and strengthen little muscles, and to help kids learn how to move and control their bodies.

This was the perfect way to get ready for Morning Meeting and our Moment of Silence.

After a few songs, we split up our group for some special Choice Time. Inside, we opened the sensory table, which looked like it was filled with water. Watch what happened when the first group put their hands inside:

The "Magic Bubbles" are water beads. They are invisible when in the water, about the size of a marble, non-toxic and very, very wonderful feeling. Come check them out.

Out in the Commons, friends were busy building ramps and rolling big wooden balls down them.
Each time they added or changed their structure, something new happened! The Catbirds travelled in and out of the room, enthralled with both activities.

Then, we headed outside between rains for a run and jump-about.

On our way back inside, we heard music! Raji invited us into the kindergarten room, and they taught us a song. We even learned some new signs. Then it was time for lunch. After we had eaten, we found a sign outside our room that said that there were butterflies in the 1st grade room. We went to check it out.

Shannon's class welcomed us in and described what had happened with the chrysalis in their room, then they brought the butterfly over for us to see. They also told us that they would have lots more butterflies soon, and they will let us know when they arrive.

When we got up from our nap, we returned with some Magic Bubbles, to thank them for their hospitality.

  3. Thanks for the comments, they are much appreciated. Some days, the blog is mostly pictures. When I can (about once a week), I try and provide more detail and a bit more about why we do what we do. If you are curious about anything in particular, please post a question and I'll gladly offer more information.
