Outdoors in Springtime

Art class! Today we painted our buildings.

Friends were particularly excited about mixing colors.

Back at the room, we had a Dance Party.

Finished this puzzle for the second time, while sharing what we knew about each state.

After snack nd  story, we headed outside.

The Catbirds were SOOOOO happy outdoors, that we decided to stay out for as long as possible.

We used our muscles for all kinds of things.

The Catbirds built a slide, of sorts. As teachers, we thought hard about whether they could manage the challenge they had set up for themselves. We noticed how  cautiously they lowered themselves over the railing.

And the glee of getting to slide down. We decided that this was a risk that they could handle. We spend a great deal of time with children balancing "the risk factors," and considering where to draw these important lines. Much has been written lately about the need for, and benefits of, allowing kids to take risks.  Children who are allowed to take risks benefit in a wide variety of ways: socially, emotionally and academically. Conversely, research has shown that kids who are protected from all risks, are later unable to assess or respond to risks safely or appropriately. Below is and article from Psychology Today,  which presents some of these ideas. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

We had Morning Meeting outside, and heard all kinds of new sounds during our moment of silence.

We read a new, and VERY popular book, Elliot Jones, Midnight Superhero.

Lots of friends were being superheroes.

We discussed what to bring outside for choice time. After Choice Time, we stayed out for lunch. We even had some play time after. I'm betting the Catbirds will sleep well tonight.
