Into the Groove

Friends began the day working hard at  writing their names. The ability to coordinate the movements and muscles necessary to write is a major developmental feat. It requires muscles that begin at the body's core, and work their way out to the shoulder, down the arm and finally to the hand. At this age, we want friends to have the idea of writing and to get some pleasure from the activity - precision and grip will fall into place as the coordination develops. Many of the physical and fine motor tasks that we engage in will help enhance both strength and coordination.

Our drop off time is growing into a  great way for family members to interact with the Catbirds, and one of our favorite times of day.

During Free Choice, we had many requests for books to be read (the Catbirds seem to be a very book-loving crowd). We started with, The Gruffalo, and friends loved the mouse and the monster. Next, Llama, Llama Mad at Mama, was requested. In this book, we looked at the characters faces, copied them and then figured out how they were feeling.

At Snack Time, friends counted out their snack and we discussed "Growing Food" - the kinds of foods that make you taller and faster and smarter.

Outdoors, we enjoyed the new climber.

We also took out the camera and tripod and the Catbirds took pictures of one another to use for our cubbies and to give to our families so that everyone can begin to put names to new faces.

We also worked on the frames for our family pictures.

And traced each other with chalk!

Some friends went over to the garden to help harvest the beans that we had planted in June.

Back inside, we had another story - one that many friends knew - The Very Hungry Caterpillar.  Then it was time for lunch.

At rest time, the Catbirds were tired. Everyone rested quietly for awhile, and quite a few friends took a nap. Others got up for table activities and to take walks and run classroom errands. It's only day two, and we have already gotten into the groove!
