Growing Up

The Catbirds were overjoyed to be back together today. Friends were gleeful and giggly, and laughter and smiling were the order of the day. There were many errands to run and people to see, and most everyone wanted to go everywhere.

Often, we left the room with Catbirds and returned with cats and dogs and even cows.

Alicia joined us early on for Spanish class and we learned some new words (she will tell you more about what we are learning, in her post).

After, we finished our journals, and friends had time to play together. There was a lot of sharing, helping one another and general "friendishness" going on in our room today. At snack, we talked about what great friends the Catbirds were being to each other, and we learned one possible reason. It turns out that ALL of the Catbirds ate growing food over the break, and this made them taller, smarter, faster and generally more grown up!

After snack, we headed outside. We discovered that the pond had running water in it. We also noticed that it was full of leaves. We went and found some containers and some "leaf fishing poles," and started fishing. We took our catches over to the composter, where we noticed something else - Flowers getting ready to bloom in our garden! Despite today's winter-like temperature, signs of spring are appearing.

Another sign of spring came in a giant truck, that left a mountain of mulch at the end of the parking lot. Friends were excited to watch the truck back in, dump it's load, and drive away with a very loud beep.

Back inside, we gathered for Morning Meeting. We had a Moment of Noises that Carol had to guess (from monster trucks to babies to stomping to popcorn popping), then our Moment of Silence.

We read a book that one of the Catbirds brought in today, called The Listening Walk. It was a great story about all of the sounds the girl could hear on her walk. We enjoyed making the sounds ourselves, and then we took a moment to listen to the sounds in our classroom. We talked about some of the new sounds we've been hearing outside - like birds singing.

Next, we took a walk down to the Art Room to check on our clay projects. Sam wasn't there, so we looked in the closet where the kiln is, to see if our clay was cooking. It was! We took turns peeking in and listening to the sounds the kiln made. We saw Sam later, and she told us that our pieces will be ready tomorrow!

When we got back, it was Choice Time. Friends worked on: building with magnatiles,

doing puzzles (in teams),

playing in the sandbox (also in very friendish ways),

painting the Peace Table,

and reading books.

To celebrate our first day back, we all walked to the cafeteria, so that we could say hello to our friends down there.
