Complicated Skills

A glimpse of yesterday's table time.

One of the challenges for the Catbirds right now is evident when friends are building. The older Catbirds are able to make huge towers and complex shapes, while the younger Catbirds are able to knock them down with both efficiency and glee. To complicate matters further, the older Catbirds have no memory of EVER having knocked down someone else's building when they were a younger Catbird. However, rather than being a problem, these interactions provide all of us with the opportunity to learn new levels of empathy and problem solving - skills that are critical at this age and for the rest of our lives. Many times throughout the day, Charity, Maria and Carol will sit down with various friends and encourage them to figure out what's going on and brainstorm solutions. There are times when it would be simpler to tell them what to do (and there are times when this does happen), but helping scaffold these critical skills is a big part of what we are here to do.

Off to music class. Here, Keisha is getting friends ready to go in and play instrument.

Some time to explore the instruments.

Singing our Hello song - Jambo.

We learned a new song and danced the rhythm of our names.

Then it was time for a birthday celebration, complete with birthday pretzels and singing!

A giant robot.

Today's time outside provided lots of opportunities to continue to look at the Catbird's skills.

Meeting time.

Today's book was, "Z is for Moose." Friends are learning how to interpret the pictures as part of the story.
