Music and Weather

Weather has been the topic of our music classes since returning from Winter break!

Beginning with rain...

Pitter patter, pitter patter
Listen to the rain (shh)
Pitter patter, pitter patter
On my window pane (shh)

We use xylophone bars to sound like rain dropping down. Finger cymbals were used to show the shh or the rest in the music.

Book: Little Cloud by Eric Carle to the music No.2 from Four Norwegian Dances by Grieg

After reading this book we talked about the different shapes that little cloud made and then we created our own shapes to the music.
We then learnt a song called Cloud Weather

Cloudy weather,
Rainy weather
When the wind blows
We all come together

We replaced the word "rainy" with all sorts of different types of weather like snowy, sunny, stormy...
We discovered that there was a pause on the word "we" and that we had to hold that note for a long time until I showed (or another leader) that the pause was over.

Rhythm work

Using a big and little cloud we were able to see that the word "big" got 1 clap and the word "little" got 2 claps. We were then able to make some of our own rhythms:

Big  little  big little

1      11     1     11

Big  big  little  big

1      1     11    1

Book: The Snowy Day by Jack Keats to the music Morning has broken (instrumental)

This book showed us all the ways that Peter liked to play in the snow. We recreated the book and tried to remember and then act out all the things Peter did!

The children shared with us some of the things they liked to do in the snow like making snow angels, catching snow in their mouth and sledding  They also acted out some of the things they liked to do and the rest of the class had to guess. We used the song What shall we do?

What shall we do when we all go out
all go out, all go out
What shall we do when we all go out
When we all go out to play?

Another song we worked on was Three little snowmen

Three little snowmen fat (clap)
Each with a funny hat (clap)
Out came the sun and melted one, now
what do you think of that (clap)
Down, down, down (clap)

It took a lot of concentration to only clap on the rest!!
