Español con los Catbirds : Nuestro cuerpo (Our body)

¡Bienvenidos familia, amigas, y amigos! During la clase de Español, it was Sebastian’s turn to choose our destination to a Spanish speaking country. After our traditional morning greeting in Spanish, he suggested we head to Perú.

To challenge los Catbirds, they were asked in Spanish how will we get there¿Comó vamos a viajar? (How will we travel?)  Then, photographs of various modes of transportation were shown and los Catbirds did an excellent job at naming each in Spanish.

Vocabulary review
carro - car
tren - train
bote – boat
 autobús - bus

But, los Catbirds knew all too well our mode of transportation as they responded, “en avión” even before a photograph was shown.  So, up went nuestras alas (our wings) and off we went en avión (on plane) to our destination. Upon our return, we settled into a círculo. Next, we read the book, “My Body, Mi cuerpo” by Gladys Rosa-Mendoza. This book was an introduction to the Spanish vocabulary that describes basic body parts.

Vocabulary words:
Ojos (eyes)
Oidos (ears)
Brazos (arms)
Manos (hands)
Dedos (fingers)
Boca (mouth)
Rodilla (knee)
Foot (pie)
Nariz (nose)

After the read aloud, we sang the traditional “Head and Shoulders” song in Spanish:

Head and Shoulders - Cabeza y hombros
Cabeza, hombros, rodillas
y dos pies
Cabeza, hombros, rodillas
y dos pies
Ojos, oidos, boca y una nariz
Cabeza, hombros, rodillas
y dos pies

What fun! We sang it a couple of times despacio (slow) and rapido (fast). It doesn’t matter in what language we sing it’s always a fun song to move to.

Following the action songs, we then changed our tempo and practiced dancing to salsa. We teamed up with a partner and practiced the steps; uno, juntos, dos, juntos.... (one, together, two, together.)

We finished our class with our traditional song, Adios, hasta luego, and Sebastian squeezing la vaca. ¡Gracias, Sebastian!

 ¡Hasta nuestro proximo viaje!

Paz,

Alicia
