The Academy of Art and Science

Today Amy was at a conference, so our friend David joined us.

He read us one of his favorite stories.

We did some building.

We learned a little about germs and the way that soap helps get them off of your hands.

We did an experiment with water and color.

We put blue, red and yellow in glass jars, with empty jars in between.

Then we ran paper towels from each color into the empty jars and asked the Catbirds what they thought would happen. What was their hypothesis?
"The paper towels will turn the color of the dye they are in."
"The more color we add to the water, the more the middle cups will change colors."
"If we mixed the different colors together, it might make different colors."
"I want to see what will happen when blue and yellow mix, and yellow and red."
"The blue and the yellow look like they are making green!"

Then we headed to art! amanda showed us the kiln, and explained what happens when out clay is fired.

Then she told us that a raku artist would be coming to AFS in the spring, and we watched a short video of a raku firing. We get to make things to put in the raku firing. Tomorrow, we will work with the third graders to make things for the firing.

Then we got to glaze our pieces.

Outside time on a beautiful day!
