April Showers Bring...Observational Explorations...

This morning was Sparkles' first day back from Spring Break! So, one of our first morning activities was to get her settled back in her tank. The Catbirds were very curious about all of her belongings, from her carrier to her food.

After our morning routine and a little choice time, the children headed over to Amanda's art class to find the tables set up with vases of flowers, water color paper, and sharpies...

Amanda revealed to us that we would be working on observational drawings! As the first step in this artistic process, she asked the Catbirds to look carefully at the flowers in front of them, and identify any shapes the different parts of the flowers and the vase were made up of...
Then, she showed the children how they could take that knowledge and observations and apply what they saw to their papers in line drawings with the sharpies.

Once an outline was on paper, Amanda brought out water colors, and demonstrated how the class would next fill in the colors they observe onto their flower drawings.

The Catbirds then got to work on their own flower observational drawings!

Returning to our room, we worked on our masterful building skills...

Our Shrinky Dink Catbirdland houses...(which you can observe now pinned to our Catbirdland map!)
Some reading...

And then we began the process of sprouting our alfalfa seeds!
We will keep an eye on these sprouts throughout the week to observe how the plants begin to emerge.

We ended our morning with an exploration of the spring mud and puddles on our playground!
Lots of splashing and squishing in our boots.

A rainy spring morning provided us a day full of observational nature themed explorations!
