Community Time

Photo of the Day: Joyful Snacktime

At AFS, the Lower School has something on Friday called "Community Time." It is a time when all of the Resource Teachers are available to work with a class who signs up. Generally, classes use these times as a way to get help finishing big projects. The Catbirds signed up for Community Time for the first time today and, in keeping with our all school theme of "Being in the Moment," we asked them to come in a simply "Be" with the Catbirds.
Specifically, we asked that they simply follow friends' with an attitude of curiosity and wonder. They were to let go of their teacher roles and simply play. Christina and I would make sure no major rules were broken, so that they would not need to control anyones behavior. Then, when their time was up, we asked that they sit down with us and share their perceptions and experiences - to provide us with fresh eyes on the Catbird classroom.
All were eager and willing to try this out.

We had Alicia from Spanish.

Rasheeda from Science.

Michelle from the Library.

Keisha from music.

A small break for some repairs and power tools.

And Jeanne from math.

Some friends in our magic elevators.

It was such a gift to have the opportunity to observe the Catbirds in this way, and to hear from our teacher friends how wonderful they are. One piece of feedback that was particularly touching to hear was how kind and loving the Catbirds are with one another and how sensitive they are to one another's needs and feelings. We heard example after example of how they helped each other without being asked - it is no wonder our Chain of Kindness keeps growing!

Then we had Music class!

And time outside.

Twas another lovely day!
