How is a Lock Down Drill Like a Giant Game of Hide and Seek?

This morning, we had our first lock down drill. We practiced ahead of time, and this is basically how we explained what we were doing:
A lock down drill is kind of like a fire drill, in that we gather together, make sure everyone is with us and stay in a group until the drill is over. It is different in that we stay inside for it and stay very quiet. We turn off the lights (knowing that it is not dark in our room with the lights off), pull down the blinds and shut the door. It is like hide and seek, because we are trying to be so quiet that a person who is playing hide and seek with us could walk by our room and not know that we are there. Carol then left the room to see if she could hear the Catbirds. Carol even put her ear on the window, AND DIDN'T HEAR A SOUND! We were very proud of ourselves.

When it was time for the real drill, the Catbirds were perfect. It was longer than our practice, and Amy whispered a story for us.

Please note: There was nothing scary about our drill. We explained it in a way that made sense to our kids and allowed them to do what was required without anxiety. If your child raises questions or concerns, please let us know and we encourage you to keep your explanations simple and fear-free. If you have any questions or concerns, please come and talk with us.

The rest of our day was more time spent in what we have taken to calling, "The Vortex of Joy."

Lots of building, taking pictures and recording our work.

Some of our architecture defies the laws of gravity.

There was family  cooking in the kitchen.

Art class!

We did printing with apples.

Then we had some fun out in the drizzle.

Morning Meeting.

We sang "Dem Bones."

Then we tried to connect our feet bones to our head bones.

This led to lots of laughing and some impressive contortions.
We worked some more on our Dragon Hunt poem.
