Bread and Butter

We began the day researching bread recipes

Our morning was busy, filled with drawing and dramatic play

We watched the bread mixing in the bread maker!

One friend shared her Paw Patrol board game, which was a popular hit. Playing a group game like this is often a challenge for friends at this stage of social skill development. Agreeing on how to play - who gets to be which favored character, who goes first, who gets to hand out pieces - are all strongly felt issues. Figuring these elements out and negotiating wants and needs often takes longer than the game itself. The Catbirds were willing and motivated to work through this process (with some teacher help) in order to play together.

While the bread was rising, we headed outside to play in the sun

There was lots to do.

At morning meeting, we worked some more on our Dragon Hunt poem, finding new rhymes to go with "stinky" (and then "tree", because stinky didn't give use much to work with).

Then Amy demonstrated some new art tools - oil pastels and watercolor.

Friends were eager to try it out.

Meanwhile, we put our bread in the oven and went to work making butter.

At lunch time, we enjoyed warm wheat bread and fresh butter. It was delicious!
After we finished our churning, we had both butter and buttermilk (who knew?), so tomorrow we will be making Buttermilk biscuits with strawberry jam!
