The Search for a Frozen Creek

We began the day with music class

We kept the beat on various parts of our body as Aedín played a song on the recorder

We patted our knees and our shins

We kept the beat on our mouths

And even on our toes

In the morning, some friends were curious about the whether the creek had frozen or not. All but two of the Catbirds predicted that the entire creek would be frozen solid from the recent cold temperatures. So, we decided to head out and see for ourselves!

Everywhere we went, we found ice. There were buckets of ice in the garden and frozen puddles everywhere!

When we arrived, we were shocked to find that...

It was not frozen! So, we asked the Catbirds why they thought the creek did not freeze. Below are their thoughtful, philosophical, and, as always, amusing responses.

"Maybe the water is strong so it doesn't get frozen" - N.L.

"It's because it's so strong, the water keeps going, going to the sewer and it's too heavy because they're rocks and animals in there" - A

"Because it keeps coming" - V

"Because it's not Christmas anymore" - M.Ca.

"'Cause it's so wide" - M.Ch.

"Because it's winter.  When the ice breaks into the seasons and you got all the snow and it's Christmas and you got all the presents" - J.C.

"'Cause it's not winter. 'Cause it's strong. A waterfall has to come over there first" - X

"Because [the creek] has the most water. There's so much water so how can it make that much ice?" - R

"Because I think the water is so strong because it will never freeze" - L.H.

"Because maybe the creek didn't froze yet. Because it's not cold enough maybe" - E

"Because it didn't" - B

"Maybe it doesn't want to" - J.M.

"If we put a lot of ice in the creek it will turn into ice" - M.H.

"Because the water is so strong, it's so fast" - L.S.

"Because it's not cold enough. Because the lake is too fast because there's too many rocks" - N.G.

We so loved taking advantage of the cool, fresh air!

The Catbirds had missed spending their days on outdoor adventures

We headed back for lunch in our classroom

And for dessert, we celebrated a birthday!
