Busy Thursday!

This morning was full of resources! Certain days in our week we have a packed resource schedule, and today was one such day. We started with Spanish with Alicia.

She greets each student in Spanish by name (or by their chosen sign in character name...) and asks them to say how they are feeling in Spanish.

Then Alicia reviews numbers and days of the week in Spanish through checking her calendar for what day it is.

Then it is time for one friend to choose on the map of Spanish speaking countries where we will be pretending to go today. In this way, Alicia opens the geographical understanding of where different languages are spoken around the world! And the children find it especially fun to learn about these different countries where Spanish is spoken.

Once we know where we are going, we must decide how we will get there. Reviewing Spanish names for modes of transportation, the class discusses why taking a bicycle across the Atlantic ocean might not be the right choice...

After reaching our pretend destination, Alicia has a game or activity to learn or review a concept in Spanish. Today's focus was numbers, and as a class we played number Bingo!

Counting in Spanish on our fingers to identify the especially tricky Spanish number names.

At the end of the lesson, Alicia says goodbye with either one of her fun puppets, or another silly method. Today the Catbirds requested her chihuahua lovey who sings in Spanish and does a wiggle dance!

After a little choice time we moved to our next resource: Art with Amanda!

She begins her lessons demonstrating what the project will be with the entire group.

Today's project was a continuation of our spring mural. We completed the paint backgrounds, and flower observational drawings, so today we were putting those elements together by cutting out copies of our flower drawings, gluing them to our painted backgrounds, and then using paint sticks to embellish our murals further.

Amanda's group demonstrations at the beginning of her class often leave the entire group contemplating art in new, exciting ways and with thoughtful expressions on our faces....

Catbird friend: "Carol what are you doing?"
Carol: "Thinking about glue sticks..."

Then we move to the tables, and get started!

Cutting...

Gluing...

And drawing with the paint sticks!

Focus today was intense...

And it was joined by joy and laughter as the friends engaged in this group art activity.

After some outside time, we came in for some requested Choice time in which many of the Catbirds created awesome buildings in our block area!
