A Most Excellent Adventure

After getting our jobs done, we headed off to the auditorium for assembly. Some young women from the upper school did a moving tribute to some famous women of color (combining both Black History and Women's History month). Each description was ended with, "She is black history and I am becoming black history."

Then the first graders did a song and slide show for their hero presentation.

It was a very moving assembly.

We headed back to the room and got ready for our first big adventure of the season.
Friends started through the chicken coop.

Then we began working on the norms for adventures. These are the rules that allow us a balance between safety and freedom when we are out and about. We have a number of running to and stopping and waiting places. These let friends go at amazing speeds and still stay within range.

We also have places where friends need to buddy up and take care of one another.

And places where we stop to climb trees.

We practice a drill on the Art Center driveway, in case a car is coming out. Catbirds yell, "Car!" and everyone moves off to the side as we wave at the car going by. We practice this a few times with Carol driving an imaginary, but very sporty car.

We arrive at the giant hill.

The playhouse provides a location for imagination.

We had snack on the stage.

Desmond tried to blow the house down.

Friends love racing down the giant hill!

Heading back. A very successful first adventure - one of many to come!

We discovered deer tracks and followed them.
