A Fire Drill and a New Student!

Lots of building this morning.

We headed to the library, but our book was interrupted by a fire drill!

The Catbirds did great, and then we came back to check out books.
Back in the room we read a very funny book, "Potato Pants."

Last week, we found wood and Carol cut it into "tree cookies." Today, we took them down to the oven to "bake" at a low temp to dry them out.

We had a wedding in Catbirdland. A kindergartener joined us to officiate and one of the Catbirds played the keyboard. It was a highly disorganized ceremony, although everyone seemed satisfied.

Rich Nourie came in to visit, and we proudly showed him our books.

Next, we read, "Goldilocks and the Three Bears."

After, we gathered on the rug with some picture story cards, and worked together to put them in story order. Sequencing is an important literacy skill and general academic skill and Catbirds are functioning at a wide variety of levels. It was great to watch friends work out strategies to figure out the answers as well as ways to help one another without giving them the answer.

We headed outside for some fresh air and big body play.

There is some dynamic dramatic play going on these days, and friends are very energetic and inclusive as they create complex scripts and scenarios.

Back inside, we had exciting news for the Catbirds. We will be getting a new student! He will be coming for a short visit this Wednesday, and will then be joining our class full time on the 23rd of January. Catbirds were so thoughtful in considering what we would need to do to make our new classmate feel welcome. They made a long list of things he will need...a mailbox, a cubby, a nap mat, etc. They thought of things I hadn't even considered.

We read another of our Catbird's books today, and he was quite excited that his was picked today.

Then it was lunchtime!
