RAKU!

Books in the morning

And family play, too

Off we went to see the raku firing! Many of the pieces we sculpted were out and ready to be fired.

Some of the raku pieces we made were created with our 3rd grade buddies, so they joined us.

There were two kilns, each firing the pieces at 1,850 degrees!

After being fired in the kiln, each piece is put into a bucket of fire, sand, and newspaper.

Heavy gloves and long tongs help them load the pieces safely.

This is Brett, the raku artist. He told us about the whole process.

When the lids are put back on the buckets, lots of smoke comes out!

Then, the big reveal!

Some 3rd Grade helpers poured water on each (very hot) sculpture in order to seal the colors and cool them off for drying.

The water created some epic steam.

Happiness!

Excitement!

After raku firing, we spent the rest of the day on our playground.

Power tools on the playground is a happy thing.

It was such a beautiful day, we decided to have lunch outside, too!
