Musical Challenge & Tortellini

Sign in and Star Wars.

Off to Art Class, where we got to construct with wooden pieces. First, Amanda showed us how to sand them smooth, and then glue shapes together to make sculptures.

The Catbirds really got into creating this way.

They came up with some amazing forms. Next class, we will embellish them.

When we got back, it was time for yoga class! Some friends joined in, while others stayed in the classroom to work on other projects.

We had musical performances and auditions.

Books to read.

Lots of incredible construction - an entire castle went up in the kitchen area!

The Beyblades were very popular. These are spinning metal tops that are not easy to coordinate, but friends have really worked hard on figuring out how to do it. They have also been good at teaching one another. When two people are doing it, the tops "compete" to see which one stays spinning the longest - or knocks down the other one.

There was another construction project - building New York skyscrapers - that involved great balance and precision.

And new models of rocket ships.

Some friends went on a walk/runabout. We headed to the Black Box, where we told scary stories and then ran screaming away from the monsters.

At Choice Time, we got out the new Flubber. This is some of our favorite stuff to play with, and it's very simple to make. As requested, here is the recipe:

Flubber
What you need:
3/4 cup cold water
1 cup Elmer’s glue
liquid food coloring/water color
1/2 cup hot water
1 teaspoon borax (you can find this in a box in the laundry aisle)
Directions:
step 1: in bowl 1 – mix together the cold water, glue, and food coloring. set aside.
step 2: in bowl 2 – mix together the hot water and borax, until the borax is completely dissolved.
step 3: slowly add glue mixture to borax mixture. mix well. pour off excess water.
Keep it in a plastic bag or Tupperware, it will last for several weeks.

We introduced our new Cha Cha Challenge: Making Magical Music. We have color coded a few of the keyboard keys and transcribed to notes to "Hot Cross Buns." We demonstrated how to read the music - matching the note color to the color on the keyboard, and also thinking about the speed of notes by singing the song. Friends were VERY excited.

As friends figure out this first, simple tune, we will increase the challenge by adding more complex tunes.

I think I've mentioned this before but, whenever someone at lunch has tortellini, it use to mean that we would get to watch the Sesame Street Tortellini Song, before rest time.

However, in recently, we have sometimes had two and even three friends with tortellini, so we have expanded our video repertoire. It now includes:

And, since the Olympics, various snowboarders - both wiping out and doing amazing stunts. This last was brought on by a heated debate about whether snowboarders ever fell. However, friends have simply become fascinated by watching them.
