Our Many Projects This Week

This is part of a game we played this week, called, "Is It a Word?"
First, the Catbirds learned the vowels, A, E, I, O, U. (And a dance to go with it).  Then, we chose one vowel, and picked a letter to go in front and one to go in back. Next, we sounded it out and figured out whether it was a word.

This was a new treasure map puzzle.

First, friends worked as a team to put it together.

After, they used the key at the bottom and had to search for a variety of items in the image - including treasure!

This week in science, we got to explode our volcano.

There was much yelling and cheering as the volcano erupted.

We spent some of the week experimenting with ice - seeing if our cups of water and cookie shapes would freeze. We explored why things freeze and what freezes. Then, we ate our ice creations and decided that they did not have much taste. We decided to try the experiment again and add some flavors. The temp warmed up, so our treats haven't frozen yet. Maybe next week.

Here we are, stirring in some flavors.

We worked on our Feelings board. There was a big debate about the color of happiness. We will soon be asking Catbird families to contribute to our study of feelings. More details to come soon.

We also had our first Book Genie this week, and will assign another Catbird this role next week. The Book Genie goes to the library and picks out a book from a selection of good books. They get to take it home and read it a few times with their families and think of some questions they might ask friends. When they return with the book, they work with me to create a quiz on the smartboard. Next week, we will have our first quiz, and you will hear more about it.

Our arms and hands grow stronger and our art becomes more complex.

The Puzzle Team!

We also introduced light and shadow play, as a study of shapes and perspective.

Friends also experimented with writing and drawing on the overhead.

We used shapes to create art.

There was corn planting and making corn flour outside.

A challenge: To put together the alphabet train.

A Catbird Facetimed in today for lunch and Scary Story.
