Summer Math

Summer is a great time for fun and relaxation.  Why not incorporate math into that summer fun?   There are many fun and engaging ways to practice math over the summer.

Here are some ideas:
  •       Play games on our brand new lower school math website! Find the site at: http://is.gd/LSmath and check out the EC/K section for games geared at 3, 4, 5 and 6 year olds.
  •  Talk to your child about numbers.  Are they able to break them apart and put them back together?  For example, can they find a few different ways to make the number 5? 10?
  • Have a measurement scavenger hunt using body parts- what can you find that is about as long as your hand?  Your foot? Your whole body?
  •  When engaging in math activities, ask open ended questions, such as, “How did you know?” to encourage your child to verbalize his or her thinking.
  • Try to incorporate “math talk” into your day-to-day conversations.  Count your steps when you are going for a walk, estimate the number of people in a group, and find shapes when you are out and about.
  •  Read Math Books!-(Check out the ‘Parent Resources’ section of the Lower School Math website for suggestions)

Best Wishes for a Math Filled Summer!

The Best Day in the History of Ever!

The day began with a peaceable Catbird kingdom

We put the finishing touches on our movie

Constructed buildings and zoos

Performed synchronized dolphin dances

Ate snack in wagons.
You know, the usual.

By late morning, we were OFF and ready to for our Magic Forest cookout adventure!

By this point in the year, the Catbird classmates are old pros. They know just what to do for our journey...

We buddied up on the road, and made sure that nobody ran their buddy into a tree (a very important thing to remember)

We took but a few minutes on the Big Hill

And found a butterfly!

Even with her most challenging questions, the Bridge Troll could not stump ANY of the Catbirds!

All of them made it happily across, heading into the depths of the Magic Forest

We arrived at the gate in good time, unlocked it, and claimed our campsite

Some family members joined us, too.

We shucked corn

We loaded the charcoal

And got cookin'!

Fire is exciting.

Really, it was the happiest day ever.

Corn.

Water spigots and hugs

We discussed the fundamental guidelines of marshmallow roasting

We got to roastin'!

Suddenly, there was a twenty-minute, sunny downpour of rain! It was not only perfect timing, but it was also SO MUCH FUN to dance in!

One friend found a nice spot for a little shut-eye

And she slept in her chariot all the way back

This was the perfect way to spend our last full day of school.
These Catbirds are amazing, joyful, expert, Magic Forest adventurers, and we LOVE them dearly!
